First however, Throbbing Gristle themselves should be reviewed. For a band with such a cool description and background (and even a pretty good name, which I suppose doesn't mean much), they fail to deliver on almost all levels. Their music is among the most cheesy, pretentious, boring, and painful music that I have ever heard. Upon reading about them and their crazed antics, you expect music to match. This is not so. However, of all of their bad albums, this is the best. The worst part about it is, it is quite good in parts. The song "We Hate You (Little Girls)" is the kind of stuff the band should have been doing all along. But also on this record is among the most cheesy and bad Throbbing Gristle recording I have heard yet, "AB/7A". The album is pretty split as far as quality and garbage go. Recorded in the same year (1981) as the groundbreaking Erector, this takes the bands harshness from that great album and increases it (in addition to adding strange sounds of water pouring?). The album starts off with the great "Ripper Territory", which is primarily a sample of a man reporting on capture of infamous "Yorkshire Ripper" Peter Sutcliffe played over the bands signature electronic noise. The album doesn't let up after this however. A couple tracks, "On Top" and "The Second Coming", are covers from the bands debut record, Birthdeath Experience. The two tracks are obviously made noisier and generally more harsh, and fit perfectly in the album. Speaking of which, the entire album, though never repetitive, has a consistent tone and the songs flow together rather well. The entire album is as acidic and cruel as any Whitehouse has ever released. Also, it should be noted that this is the first Whitehouse album to feature a fascination with serial killers. Excellent Record, Get it.

This album will be posted later today.

Älgarnas Trädgård - Delayed and Framtiden är ett Svåavande Skepp, Förankrat i Forntiden

(From last.fm) Älgarnas Trädgård (Garden of the Elks) was a Swedish psychedelic progressive-rock band who recorded just two albums, Framtiden är ett svävande skepp, förankrat i forntiden (“The Future is a Floating Ship Anchored in Antiquity”) and Delayed.

These two albums I found to both be absolute gems, intensely psychedelic concoctions that would definitely would be filed as early krautrock if it were not from Sweden.

They feature very early elements of sampling and electronica, and have elements of folk and early progressive rock. They also contain a delightfully mythical vibe, suggesting the band were fascinated with ancient folklore and mythology. If any of the above sounds appealing to you then you are sure to enjoy these. They started off as a solo project of Le Forte Four member Joe Potts. The first release was the Airway 7”, which featured subliminal messages to coincide with an art exhibition in Tokyo. In August 1978 Airway made their live debut at the Lace Gallery. This lineup featured Potts and Chip Chapman on electronics, Vetza on vocals, Rick Potts on mandolin, Dennis Duck on saxophone, Juan Gomez on bass, and Tom Recchion on drums. They attempted to create subliminal messages beneath a wall of noise by using tape delay. Recordings from the performance were released as Live At Lace by the Los Angeles Free Music Association.

Live At Lace is an interesting album. It reminds me of Boris's collaborations with Merzbow, only with less vocals, combined with elements of improvised Krautrock and Psychedelica. It's certainly innovative and whilst it can drone on at times as with a lot of improvised music it seems to have been influential on many modern acts today, if not directly, such as the two I mentioned. I know japanoise legends Hijokaidan are fans. Definitely worth a few listens and another enjoyable gem on the Nurse With Wound list.

Bitrate: 192 kbps

Tolerance - Anonym

When I first listened to this I was under the impression this was recorded after the Tolerance album Divin (which can be found here). It seems like an easy enough mistake to me because Anonym appears to be more interesting, and generally seems to have more going on. Divin was mostly made up of weird lo-fi electronics. However, Anonym has that, and (what sounds like) vocal samples, and most interestingly of all, piano. It also has a more mysterious and eerie slant. An overall excellent NWW list entry. Highly recommended.

Bitrate: 192 kbps

Boyd Rice - The Black Album

If you have seen any other posts on this blog you might be asking yourself, "Why is the picture I'm looking at not an album cover, but rather a man standing over a large pile of broken records?". Well the man is Boyd Rice. Also, you may have noticed that the album is called "The Black Album" (sometimes just titled "Boyd Rice"). This is because the album cover itself is entirely black with no text. This presents problems when combined with the black background of the blog, but moving on. The album itself is made up of loops. That's it. Each track is just a loop(s) that drone on and on. I imagine it will be of interest to Boyd Rice fans, and uhhh... I'm actually not sure of anyone else who would want to hear this. It is pretty annoying as background music, and its painfully boring besides that. Did I mention all the songs are untitled? So if you want to find your favorite loops you'll have to remember the track number. Don't lose all hope in Mr. Rice though, but he is an interesting, innovative and great musician generally speaking, it's just this album that is a complete waste of time. Divin is different from any electronic music that I heard previously. Instead of using the same bland electronics used by every other band, it employs the most archaic and lo-fi equipment imaginable. However, this most definitely works out in their favor, because they created what seems to me to be the most atmospheric and dark music of its kind. It is very obvious why they are on the NWW list. This is electronic music for people who hate electronic music. Anyway, this album is a collection of late 60s Krautrock with a supposedly socialist political slant. Lyrically, all that was lost on me as I don't speak any German but I found the music rather enjoyable if disposable and typical Krautrock. I've listened to this a few times and it doesn't really hold much replay value (well maybe lyrics wise, though I wouldn't know) but is definitely a pleasant enough release to warrant one listen. The Dadazuzu track is unsurprisingly the standout, the rest being rather poppy, cheery but sadly forgettable Krautrock. AMM (who never revealed what their name stands for) are a long running British free improvisational group and the first known act to deliberately try not to fit any genre. They sure succeeded in their goal with this album at least, as I have a very hard time describing it. You can definitely hear it's influence on Nurse With Wound though, and most other early industrial acts in general. The album frequently alternates between furious noise freak outs and creepy ambience, remaining interesting throughout, something a lot of avant-garde improv stuff fails at. Any fan of bizarre experimental music (which I'm sure includes you if you're reading this blog) is sure to enjoy this rather radical and influential 60s piece. Further on is a quick burst of randomness, the life of the party. A jumbled mess of sounds and instruments, put together with thought and the perfect outcome was produced; a happy, upbeat part of the extremely emotional track. A rather laid-back second part to the first track, a mixture of wind, string and percussion instruments and very relaxing to listen to. Its calmness and smooth musical flow really takes you somewhere else, its a truly feel-good piece of music. Its change of type of sound makes it fresh throughout and doesn't leave you looking at how much time is left before it ends and you can finish the song. A ghostly recording of a school playground (I assume) and a child's speech is spooky, yet touching and adds a nice, tidy finish to the first track.
The second track combines the random with the calm, with surreal sound effects dotted in every so often, giving the effect of a very strange dream sort of thing. I'm not exactly the best at explaining things, just go listen for yourself if it sounds good to you.
I really liked this album, and urge fans of ambiance to download it to enjoy it as much as I have. It's pretty standard krautrock, with the exception of the band's venture into progressive elevator music on one track. It isn't really anything to get excited about. They are a little too synthy and bland for me to enjoy. However, if you would like to get this, go ahead and click the album cover.

Operation Rhino - Creation Collective Musique Improvisee

Operation Rhino is, simply put, quite alarming. One of the more interesting finds from the NWW list, I am pretty blown away. Created by what reads like a who's who of hip 70s experimental artists (including Pierre Bastien, the man behind Nu Creative Methods), this is an amazing three track improvisational, orchestral pummeling, led by a frenzied trumpet. Perhaps, I am alone in my opinion of this album, but if you're interested click the photo above.

Cromagnon - Orgasm

Orgasm is one of the most startlingly original and ahead of its time (1968) albums I've ever had the fortune to come across. The only album by mysterious group Cromagnon (apparently comprised of bubblegum pop producing duo Brian Elliot and Austin Grasmere and the assistance of their "Connecticut tribe"), it combines prototypical elements of genres as diverse as black metal, no wave and freak folk to create a truly fresh recording, a magical slice of insane innovation that rewards repeated listenings and that you'll find yourself proudly recommending to fellow music buffs for years to come. It's a diverse platter, but a remarkably consistent one. An absolute treasure I can't recommend enough to anyone with a love for triumphant experimental music.

Download it, love it, then buy it here.

Ame Son - Catalyze & Primitive Expression

Here we have both known studio albums by french progressive outfit Ame Son, whose members also featured in Red Noise and Kominterm. It's not particularly original sounding material, nor is it technically exceptional but it nails taking you into a blissful alternate universe beautifully. An immensely pleasurable listen, particularly recommended if you're feeling stressed out at all, as it's one of the most soothing listens I've had recently. In fact, in certain songs there is barely even a trace of Krautrock (particularly on Only the Dancers in general). It sounds like a mixture of the glam of David Bowie (who the vocalist sounds eerily similar to on some tracks) and the psychedelic work of Amon Duul II. Except for one track on each album, gone are Krautrock's lengthy tracks in favor of tracks around the 5 minute mark or shorter. With a pretty surprising amount of poppy hooks these albums are remarkably listenable. Frith was also a member of Art Bears, Massacre and Skeleton Crew. He has collaborated with a number of prominent musicians, including Robert Wyatt, Brian Eno, Lars Hollmer, The Residents, Lol Coxhill, John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Derek Bailey, Iva Bittová and Bob Ostertag. He has also composed several long works, including Traffic Continues (1996, performed 1998 by Frith and Ensemble Modern) and Freedom in Fragments (1993, performed 1999 by Rova Saxophone Quartet).

Guitar Solos - Friths first studio album in 1971, the album in the download provided is the 1991 reindorsement.

A welcoming intro of out-of-tune guitars, followed by very surreal sounds is just a taster of the rest of the album, and a very convincing and encouraging one at that. The majority of the album has the sound of some sort of string instrument as a background sound and gives a very mellow atmosphere throughout, which I found myself increasingly interested and amazed by. Distortion combined with teetering between tempos, sometimes with synphonics adding a dismal undertone, added a sure warrent of obscurity and uniqueness and I fully enjoyed listening to this album, and urge fans of experimental and avant-garde to download and experience for themselves.

Click artwork above for link to download.

Average bitrate; 224 kp/s

Gash - A Young Man's Gash

Gash are a Krautrock group, who formed in 1972 and disbanded later the in same year.

A Young Man's Gash - sang in English, and possibly their only solo album ever produced, is usually categorized under Psychedelic Rock.

Corny love lyrics with background singers "ahhh"ing in harmony, slow instrumentals in some songs whilst upbeat in others, its your typical 70s love album. Whilst this cheesefest brought me some mild amusement, and from research others agree, it's not something I'd recommend downloading. However, it was on the NWW list and so I reviewed it, it's unfortunately predictable and standard, which is exactly the type of thing NWW list collectors want to avoid. He uses words, sounds, music, electronics and other people, in fact everything that is to hand. Ron Geesin is a new and startling experience. Ron Geesin fits into no existing category or neat pigeon hole. He and his sound creations are of next year not this. Ron Geesin has a loud voice with a Scots accent. Many of Ron Geesin’s compositions are improvised. Most people don’t know what to make of Ron Geesin. Some are bewildered, some excited. Ron Geesin intrigues and involves you.” The cover is great too in a kitschy kind of way, with stock-psychedelic lettering and a photo showing the young Geesin looking like a maths teacher, sitting on a stool in his studio. Nothing mind-blowing, but enough to get you thinking that this album may well contain some interesting sonic tinkering – or if that doesn’t come off, maybe just some bad folk instead, at the other extreme. There’s no bad folk to be found here though, and plenty of off-kilter tinkering, so don’t fear. The reverse features a white-lined drawing on red showing Geesin with microphone in hand, rising genie-like out of his ‘red machine’, a red petrol can he used for jug-blowing (or, as Geesin has put it, “the ancient Black art of jug-blowing”!).

My opinion on the album;

A difficult album to label, I would catagorise this one as experimental. The bizarre sounds, strange speeches resembling a British Captain Beefheart, frequent change in speed and macabre, yet sometimes happier and upbeat, piano pieces, along with chirpy outbursts from other instruments just add to the uniqueness of this album, making it very pleasurable to listen to and hard to forget.

Click album art for link to download.

Average bitrate: 217.14 kp/s

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Anal Magic and Rev. group from Sweden. Items used range from wooden blocks to pianos, the sound encompasses surrealism and classic jazz. Upon listening, the experience is rather obscure and sublime, takes you to a very different level of imagination and I instantaneously loved it. While some tracks are faster paced than others, I found this to be quite effective as your emotions transcend. I thoroughly enjoyed this album and found it very inspiring, 4.5/5.

Click album art for link to download.

Average bitrate; 320 kp/s

Mars - 78+

Despite having little to no musical "talent" (whatever that is), Mars are one of the more well known No Wave bands. This album is pretty typical No Wave. The guitars are completely out of tune, not that it really matters considering the way they play. The drums are pounded upon crazily. The vocals alternate between male and female (and on a couple tracks both), and are mostly shrill and shouted, but occasionally they are delivered with a really delightful moaning. Judging by how it sounds, the band recorded live in a large metal can. To my knowledge this compilation is the majority of Mars' recordings. There was no desire to learn to play traditional instruments so kazoos were bought and assorted noise makers modified or built from scratch. The band started playing regularly every Monday night in 1966 and has just carried on .The personal has stayed the same. John Boyle (artist) kazoo and drums, John Clement (MD) guitar and drums, Bill Exley (geezer/latinist) vocals, Murray Favro (artist) guitar and Art Pratten (pensioner/gentleman of leisure) Pratt-a-various and Waterpipe. Greg Curnoe (deceased), Hugh McIntyre (deceased) and Archie Leitch (permanently retired) play less often.
The band currently plays most every Monday night at The Forest City Gallery, 258 Richmond St. just south of under pass in London, Ontario, Canada. The atmosphere is informal. We play for our own enjoyment but an audience is welcome.

As usual, click the album cover(s) to download and enjoy.

Horrific Child - L'etrange Mr. Whinster

My first proper entry on this blog is L'etrange Mr. Whinster by Horrific Child, a French Horror-Psych-Prog band founded by Jean-Pierre Massiera. Most to all won't be our rips, we simply hope to conveniently offer download links all in one focused place. We publish in random order, but hopefully will eventually be able to offer albums by all featured artists. Purchase links will be included where possible and as always, if you hold the copyright to any of the music which currently is legitimately available that we're posting and wish us to stop, get in
